Host Automation
Step 1 — Add Omnisphere FX Rack
1. Create a new track by clicking on Create → Insert Audio Track or Create → Insert MIDI Track (either track type will work).
2. Insert the Omnisphere FX Rack onto the track. You can do this in Ableton’s Browser by going to Library → Plug-ins → FX-Omnisphere. You can choose either AU or VST, but please only use one plug-in type for your session.
3. Click the wrench icon in the device title bar for the plug-in, to bring up the plug-in window:
5. In the plug-in window, Right-click (or Ctrl-click) the parameter → choose Enable Host Automation.
6. In the device title bar, click the downward arrow and then select “Configure.”
7. Next, move the desired parameter in the plug-in window; it will appear as a slider in the device panel (these are the things Live can map/automate)
You can now automate that parameter in Ableton manually by drawing in the Automation as you would with other parameters. Or, continue on to Step 2 to incorporate your MIDI controller in the automation process.
Step 2 — Tell Live to accept MIDI from your controller
1. Open Preferences → Link, Tempo, & MIDI.
2. In MIDI Ports, turn ON “Remote” for your controller’s Input (this is what enables custom MIDI mappings). If you also want to play notes from the same device, turn Track (In) on too.
Step 3 — Enter MIDI Map Mode
1. In Ableton, Click the MIDI button (top-right) or press Cmd+M/Ctrl+M.
2. Everything that can be mapped turns blue, and the Mapping Browser opens.
Step 4 — Click the parameter, move your hardware knob
1. Click the parameter in the device panel (the slider you added with Configure).
2. Turn your knob/fader on the controller. You’ll see the mapping appear in the Mapping Browser.
3. Exit MIDI Map Mode (press MIDI or Cmd+M/Ctrl+M again) and test the control.
Step 5 — (Optional) Record automation
To capture your movements into the song:
- Arrangement View: enable Automation Arm, hit Record, and move the control – Live writes Arrangement automation. Use A to toggle Automation view. Ableton Help
- Alternately, using Session View clips: enable Automation Arm, arm the track, then press Session Record to write clip envelopes.
