Boolean Filtering uses the criteria “Or,” “And,” and “Not” in order to include or exclude certain attributes to narrow your search.
You can use Boolean Filtering it by:
- Filtering search results using a combination of mouse clicks and key commands,
- Accessing the Boolean menus by clicking on the icons at the top-right corner of each filter (Full Browser only).
- Typing an expression into the Search field,
Depending on the Boolean expression you choose, the selected Attribute Assignments will be displayed with different colors and outlines.
“OR”
This option says, “Show me results that are tagged with either of these Attributes.”
- To choose OR, simply select the Attribute (OR is the default filter state).
- To make multiple selections, use CMD/CTRL-click.
- The selection(s) in the column will be highlighted in blue, and both circles in the icon will be filled in.
Example: Within the Mood column, while making sure “All” is not selected, Command-click (Mac) or Control-click (PC) “Mournful” and “Mystical” to display only those sounds that are tagged with either of those Attributes. The number of results will vary, depending on the selected Library / Category.
“AND”
This option says, “Show me results that are only tagged with BOTH of these Attributes.”
Example: Within the Mood column, CMD/CTRL-right-clicking “Mournful” and “Mystical” will display only those sounds that are tagged with BOTH Mournful AND Mystical tags.
- The selection(s) in the column will be bordered in blue
- To make multiple AND selections, right-click any non-All value, then CMD/CTRL-right-click additional values to add them to the results.
- Only the intersection of the circles in the icon will be filled in.
“NOT”
This option says, “Show only those results that are NOT tagged with these Attributes.”
- To choose NOT, use Option-click/Alt-click and select an Attribute.
- To make multiple selections, OPT/ALT-right-click any non-All value, then PT/ALT-CMD-right-click additional values to remove them from the results.
- The selection(s) in the column will be bordered in red and only the left circle in the icon will be filled in.
Example: Within the Mood column, Option/Alt-click “Nightmarish” to remove any sounds from the results that are tagged as such.
You can also type expressions into the Search field to filter your results.
- For example:* Typing “Mournful and Mystical” will include Patches that fit both genres.
- Typing “Mournful or Mystical” will include Patches with either Attribute.
- Typing “Mournful and not Mystical” will include Patches with the tag “Mournful,” but not ones that are tagged “Mystical.”
- Parentheses can also be used for multiple criteria selection: (Mournful or Mystical) and (Dramatic and not Disturbing).
NOTE: Standard left-clicking deselects any blue or red-outlined selections and returns to the default OR selection within a column.
