MIDI Learn

In Logic, you can set the Omnisphere FX plug-in to receive MIDI from your MIDI controller. To do so, we’ll first need to create a dedicated software instrument track containing an instance of the Omnisphere FX plug-in. From there, we can route the audio from another track (audio, another software instrument track, etc.) into the Omnisphere FX track. This approach allows us to MIDI Learn parameters in the Omnisphere FX plug-in to whichever knobs, sliders, or buttons we choose on our MIDI controller. That way, you can easily adjust Omnisphere FX parameters in real-time right from your MIDI controller! Here are some steps to help you get started using MIDI Learn with the Omnisphere FX plug-in:

First, add a software instrument track in Logic by clicking on the “+” icon in the main window. From there, click the software instrument drop-down menu, navigate to the “AU MIDI-controlled Effects” option, and select the “FX-Omnisphere” plug-in as shown below:

Next, open the “Side Chain” drop-down menu in the Omnisphere FX plug-in window:

In the Side Chain menu, select the input that you want to process:

In this example, there is a separate software instrument track in Logic containing an instance of Apple’s AU MIDI Synth. As such, we’ve selected “AU MIDI Synth” from the Side Chain menu in the Omnisphere FX plug-in window.

NOTE: The input you select must be active in order for it to appear in the Side Chain menu in the Omnisphere FX plug-in window. If there aren’t any active inputs, no options will appear for you to select.

In this configuration, we’ll be running the audio output from the AU MIDI Synth track into the Omnisphere FX plug-in, which is instantiated on a separate software instrument track in Logic. The audio output of the Omnisphere FX track contains the processed audio.

Now you can MIDI Learn parameters in the Omnisphere FX plug-in to controls on your MIDI controller for easy editing in real time! To do this, start by opening the Omnisphere FX plug-in. Next, right-click on the parameter that you would like to receive MIDI, and select “MIDI CC Learn” (or MIDI Note Learn). Then, move the knob, fader, or press the button on your MIDI controller that you would like to control the Omnisphere FX parameter:

If you want to record the processed audio output of your Omnisphere FX software instrument track, add an audio track and set the “Audio Input” setting as the output of the Omnisphere FX track (which in this example, is “Bus 1”):
