The Roland SH-4d is a desktop synth that can create a wide variety of sounds, from classic Roland SH-101 and Juno 106, to FM and wavetable textures. The panel is intuitive and easy to use, and it sequencer allows you to control multiple Omnisphere parts, which can be fun. A key limitation of the SH-4d as a MIDI controller is that oscillator selection does not transmit MIDI data. As a result, most panel controls affect all layers of an Omnisphere patch simultaneously, reducing the ability to control individual layers independently. Even with that in mind, it’s still a fun device to use as an Omnisphere controller.

Roland SH-4d Strengths:

  • Intuitive Layout
  • Multiple Oscillator Types
  • Sequencer
