Not all of the knobs and faders on Fantom send MIDI CC data by default. This means when using the Roland Fantom 08 to control your Omnisphere, the following knobs on the Fantom 08 are assigned to the following Omnisphere parameters:

  • Knob 1 (CC#73) – Global Controls Amp and Filter Envelope Attack
  • Knob 2 (CC#72) – Global Controls Amp and Filter Envelope Release
  • Knob 3 (CC#91) – Global Controls Ambience Amount
  • Knob 4 (CC#93) – Global Controls Unison

Setup

To control Omnisphere using the Fantom 08, you’ll need to do the following:

  1. Connect the Fantom 08 to your computer via USB.
  2. Set up the Fantom 08 to control Omnisphere.
  3. Download and install the Roland USB-MIDI Driver.
  4. Enable the Fantom 08 as a MIDI input device in the host software you’re using (DAW, Standalone, etc.).
  5. Activate the Fantom 08 Hardware Profile in Omnisphere 3 or later.

Fantom 08 SETUP

First, we’ll need to setup the Fantom 08 to use the correct USB driver:

  1. Press the [MENU] button.
  2. Select “SYSTEM” on the touch screen.
  3. Select the “GENERAL” Tab.
  4. Set the “USB Driver” option to “VENDOR.”
  5. Press the [WRITE] button.
  6. Turn the Fantom 08 OFF and back ON.

Now we’ll need to set up the Fantom 08 to control external instances of Omnisphere:

  1. Press the [ZONE SELECT] button until it goes dark, then press any of the ZONE INT/EXT [1] – [8] buttons to activate the Zone you’d like to use to send MIDI to Omnisphere. In this example, we’ll select Zone [1].
  2. Make sure ZONE INT/EXT [1] (or your chosen Zone) is lit up in green – this indicates that the Zone is transmitting MIDI out of the Fantom 08. If it is not green, hold the [SHIFT] button and press ZONE INT/EXT [1] (or your chosen Zone).
  3. Press the [CTRL] button to activate the knobs.

USB DRIVER

  • Check to see if the necessary Roland Fantom Driver has already been installed by opening up the Omnisphere Standalone (or your preferred DAW) and verify the Roland Fantom is on your list of MIDI inputs.
  • If the Fantom 08 is not listed as a MIDI input, download and install the driver that is compatible with your computer’s operating system from the Roland Support page. Restart the host and you should see it listed.

HOST CONNECTION

  • Open your host (DAW, Standalone, etc.) and make sure the Fantom 08 is enabled as a MIDI input device.

OMNISPHERE SETUP

  • Open Omnisphere and from the header, select the HW menu button.
  • From the drop-down menu, select “Roland > Roland Fantom 08” to activate the Fantom 08 hardware profile.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Not working? Here are some things to try:

  • Is your DAW receiving MIDI from the Fantom 08?
  • Make sure your DAW is configured to correctly route the MIDI output of the Fantom 08 to the MIDI channel assigned to the desired part in Omnisphere.
  • If you are using the Omnisphere standalone host, make sure the MIDI output channel on the Fantom 08 matches the MIDI channel of the Omnisphere Part you want to control.
