Setup
To control Omnisphere using the MX, you’ll need to do the following:
- Connect the MX to your computer via USB.
- Set up the MX to control Omnisphere.
- Download and install the Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver for your computer.
- Enable the MX as a MIDI input device in the host software you’re using (DAW, Standalone, etc.).
- Activate the MX Hardware Profile in Omnisphere 3 or later.
MX SETUP
- Omnisphere relies on the default settings of the Generic Control Template on the MX while it is in DAW Remote mode.
- Activate DAW Remote mode by pressing the [DAW Remote] button, then press the [KEYBOARD] / [PIANO] buttons to switch through all the available templates until you see “50: Generic.”
MIDI OUTPUT SETUP
Follow these steps to configure the MX to send MIDI through USB:
- Press the [UTILITY] button.
- Select “02:MIDI” from list with Cursor [UP] / [DOWN] arrow buttons and press [ENTER].
- Set “MIDI IN/OUT” to “USB.”
USB DRIVER
- Check to see if the necessary Yamaha Steinberg USB driver has already been installed by opening up the Omnisphere Standalone (or your preferred DAW) and verifying the MX is on your list of MIDI inputs.
- If the MX is not listed as a MIDI input, download and install the driver that is compatible with your computer’s operating system from the MX Downloads page.
- Restart the host and you should see the MX in the list of MIDI Inputs in your Host.
HOST CONNECTION
- Open your host (DAW, Standalone, etc.) and make sure the MX Port 2 is enabled as a MIDI input device.
OMNISPHERE SETUP
- Open Omnisphere and from the header, select the HW menu button.
- From the drop-down menu, select “Yamaha > Yamaha MX”, and activate the MX hardware profile that matches your keyboard.

NOTE: Omnisphere will respond to all three banks of knobs on the MX. To switch between each bank, press the [KNOB FUNCTION] button.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Not working? Are are some things to try:
- Is your DAW receiving MIDI from the MX?
- Make sure your DAW is configured to correctly route the MIDI output of the MX to the MIDI channel assigned to the desired part in Omnisphere.
- If you are using the Omnisphere standalone host, make sure the MIDI output channel of the MX matches the MIDI channel of the Omnisphere Part you want to control.
- Are the MX knobs sending the correct MIDI CC messages used to control Omnisphere? A quick way to check is by connecting your MX to the MX49_MX61 Editor application and loading the Control Template “50: Generic” from your MX workstation. See the list at the top of the page for the correct MIDI CC#s.
