Setup
To control Omnisphere using the SH-4d, you’ll need to do the following:
- Using a USB cable, connect the SH-4d to your computer.
- Set up the front panel of the SH-4d to send MIDI CC messages..
- Enable “Roland SH-4d” as a MIDI input device to Omnisphere in the host software you’re using (DAW, Standalone, etc.).
- Activate the SH-4d Hardware Profile in Omnisphere 3 or later.
MIDI OUTPUT SETUP
- Hold down the [SHIFT] button and press the [16] button to open the menu screen.
- Use the [1] knob to scroll to “SYSTEM SETTINGS” and press [ENTER].
- Enable CC transmission.
- In the System Settings menu, use the [1] knob to navigate to the “MIDI” section.
- Find the parameter labeled “Tx CC.”

OMNISPHERE SETUP
Open Omnisphere and from the header, select the HW menu button:

From the drop-down menu, select “Roland>Roland SH-4d” to activate that Hardware Profile.

Profile Notes
A key limitation of the SH-4d as a MIDI controller is that oscillator selection does not transmit MIDI data. As a result, most panel controls (except for the oscillator power buttons and levels) affect all layers of an Omnisphere patch simultaneously, reducing the ability to control individual layers independently.
- The LFO RATE knob in the SH-4d is assigned to Global Vibrato Rate in Omnisphere.
- The LFO PITCH knob in the SH-4d is assigned to Global Vibrato Depth in Omnisphere.
Unassigned Controls
The following Roland SH-4d controls have no effect on Omnisphere:
- Volume
- Model
- Oscillator selection buttons
- Effects section
- Filter Type
- LFO Type
Troubleshooting
Not working? Here are some things to try:
- Make sure the MIDI Channel is set to Ch.1.
- Is your DAW receiving MIDI from the SH-4d?
- Make sure your DAW is configured to correctly route the MIDI output of the SH-4d to the MIDI channel assigned to the desired Part in Omnisphere.
