The STEAM Engine® is the core technology created by the Spectrasonics in-house development team, and is used as the basis of all Spectrasonics performance instruments, including Omnisphere®, Keyscape®, and Trilian®—just like our core S.A.G.E. technology, which is used for groove-based instruments like Stylus RMX®—instruments that support Spectrasonics’ long-term vision of the highest-quality sounds and the most musically intuitive user experience.

Virtual instruments built with the multi-timbral STEAM Engine offer a variety of hybrid synthesis and control capabilities, including high-resolution Streaming Sample Playback, Integrated FX, Variable Waveshape synthesis, Granular synthesis, FM synthesis, polyphonic Ring Modulation, Timbre Shifting, and a comprehensive Flex-Mod modulation routing system.

Using the STEAM Engine®, new products are being created from the ground up that support Spectrasonics’ long-term vision of the highest-quality sounds and the most musically intuitive user experience. Our instruments are fully supported across industry changes and this flexible software permits more innovations and quick adaptations in the future.

Virtual instruments powered by STEAM have unlimited expansion possibilities. The flexible core software allows sounds to be shared across hosts and computer platforms. New sounds can be added to the Core Library via Patch and Soundsource updates and all Spectrasonics virtual instruments based on S.A.G.E. and STEAM technologies can interact in musically useful and innovative ways.
