Each of the four AUX knobs in each Part’s Mix Strip controls the send level to the corresponding AUX FX racks found on the FX Page. They are all “post-fader” sends.
AUX SIGNAL ROUTING
To get the most from the RMX FX, it’s important to understand the signal flow of the AUX system.
Using AUX1 as an example:
- The audio signal from each Part’s Edit Group is first routed through the AUX SEND mini-slider on the AUX1 FX rack page:
- The Edit Group signals are then routed through the AUX 1 Send knob on the Mixer Page.
If there are multiple Edit Groups on this Part, each Edit Group has its own AUX SEND mini-slider. There can be as many as 16 AUX SEND mini-sliders on a Part (since there can be up to 16 active Edit Groups per Part). What this means in musical terms is that. for example, you can apply less reverb on the downbeats of a groove than the backbeats, using the same reverb unit. This is preferable to using multiple reverb inserts for each Edit Group, which is a waste of CPU power.
All of these Edit Group AUX SENDS levels are routed through the AUX1 knob on the Mixer Page. This AUX1 send knob on the Mixer Page becomes a sort-of “Master Send level” to the AUX1 FX Rack for each Part’s Edit Groups.
- The AUX1 send knob from the Mixer Page sends the signal into the input of the AUX1 FX Rack.
- The output of the AUX1 FX rack is routed (returned) and mixed directly into the Main Output (OUT A). AUX Returns always route to Output A regardless of which Output Assignment is chosen for the Groove.
NOTE: Although there are no dedicated AUX Returns, you can insert an Imager FX unit in the last open slot of an AUX rack to serve as a Master Aux Return level control for that rack.
CPU CONSERVATION AND MUTING
Please note that when all Aux Send knobs on the Mixer are in the zero position, all AUX FX racks are internally bypassed/muted to preserve CPU power.
This technique works differently than how AUX sends work on an analog mixer. If you’re used to quickly bringing an AUX send up and down to add a momentary delay or reverb effect to a single beat (a la reggae dub-style), and you are only using a single AUX send on one specific Part in your mix, you’ll notice that the FX units mute when the send is moved back to zero position, which makes that production technique not work in this case. A simple solution is to raise another unused AUX send knob on the Mixer page. Now the AUX FX returns will not be muted when you move the desired AUX send knob back to zero position.
Conversely, it’s a good idea to zero any unused sends on the Mixer page, because ALL four FX racks are turned ON when ANY AUX send knob is raised.
